The Cost of Idling – How Latium Fleet Management Can Help
At Latium Fleet Management, we pride ourselves on using technology to discover cost-savings for our fleet customers. We recently discovered major cost savings for a client in a somewhat unlikely area. Instead of looking at where the vehicles go each day, we looked at what they’re doing when they’re not going anywhere.
This client has a fleet of close to 125 vehicles with the majority being gas-powered pick-up trucks. After looking at the data between January 1, 2016, and March 31, 2016, we decided to investigate the effect of idling. We noticed that, despite the unseasonably warm winter weather, the amount of vehicle idling had not dropped. This idling was costing the client money – both in the form of fuel and maintenance costs.
Based on manufacturer’s information, on average one hour of vehicle idling consumes approximately three litres of fuel and is the equivalent of forty kilometres of engine wear. Let’s do some quick math and see what this all means.
- Total Estimated cost of fuel used while idling for Q1: $32,000
- Total Estimated cost of fuel used while idling for 2016: Over $120000
- Total equivalent distance travelled while idling in Q1: Over 40,000 Kms
- Total equivalent distance travelled while idling in 2016: Over 160000 Kms
Latium Fleet Management can help clients like this by developing a strategy to reduce fuel costs and engine wear. Even a 20% decrease in idling would provide significant cost savings. Contact us for more information on how we can help.
